  • About

'Anyone who is motivated and able to offer financial support to the arts is visionary and heroic in my view.  (Director Matthew Warchus remembering Tom Stoppard's early financial support of his career).

Excelsis, and our own wonderful local composer Clive Osgood, are looking for some visionary heroes!

    Recording Project

Following a performance of a setting of Dixit Dominus by  Clive Osgood in 2015, 2017 sees the launch of our 10th Anniversary Fund-Raising Campaign, 'Excelsis10', to record a selection of Clive's wonderful choral music. We strongly believe in Clive’s abilities as a composer and feel that to do his music justice, we must produce a recording of the highest possible standard. The production of such a recording is inevitably complex and expensive. Your support will therefore be utterly invaluable to us; 'If money goes before all ways lie open'. To show our appreciation you will be named in the roll of honour that will appear in the CD booklet which will recognise those who have made a contribution to the recording. We would really love to help put Clive's music on the map and we hope that you will be feeling visionary and heroic in wishing to help us to do so!

Please follow the progress of the recording project and forthcoming events here on our website, or on Facebook, where there will be frequent news of how the project is progressing. Or join us at one of our concerts and introduce yourself to us. Our 10th anniversary promises to be an exciting year.

    2017 - Excelsis' 10th Anniversary Events

We kicked off our year of musical celebrations with a Gala Concert for Grayshott Concerts on 4 March played to a packed house thanks to Grayshott Concerts brilliant organisation and publicity. ‘Masses of Masses’ featured Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Haydn’s Nelson Mass, with the London Mozart Players accompanying us at St Luke’s Church in Grayshott. In May we went on our first international tour, travelling to Belgium to perform in Bruges and Ypres. In Ypres we took part in Sunday morning Mass at the Cathedral and were also honoured to be able to sing at the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate. A post-tour concert was held on 10 June at St Christopher’s in Haslemere.

An Autumn concert featuring John Rutter's Gloria with brass accompaniment, and works by Clive Osgood is set for 18 November at St Alban’s Church in Hindhead. Buy tickets here.

    About the Choir

Excelsis at RehearsalThe Excelsis chamber choir is a group of about 30 singers, many with a background of musical training, under the baton of Musical Director Robert Lewis. The choir performs a wide variety of music to a very high standard, and is performing the opening concert of the Grayshott Concerts' 2017 season with the London Mozart Players, conducted by Robert Lewis.

In 2015 Excelsis performed the world premiere of Karl Jenkins’ latest work, The Healer – A Cantata for St Luke, with the Marylebone Camerata. The Healer was commissioned by Grayshott Concerts to celebrate the organisation’s 10th anniversary. Following the success of The Healer project, the choir was invited by Sir Karl to sing in a performance of The Armed Man with the Welsh choir, Cor Caedydd, and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales at St. David’s Hall, Cardiff. Both performances were broadcast on national radio, The Healer on Classic FM and The Armed Man on BBC Radio 3.

2015 was a significant year for the choir as we had our debut concert with the London Mozart Players and and also had the honour of becoming the Choir-in-Residence for Grayshott concerts in recognition of the many performances that the choir has done over the years for the audiences of Grayshott Concerts.
